Short answer: US Original Oreos contain no animal ingredients on their label, so many vegans eat them. But Oreo doesn't call them vegan, they may contain traces of milk, and some flavors do contain dairy. Here's the full picture.
What's in Original Oreos?
The ingredient list for US Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, as shown on Oreo's product page, is:
There's no milk, egg, gelatin or other animal ingredient on the list, and milk isn't in the allergen statement. Despite the "creme" filling, there's no cream in it.
So why isn't the answer a simple "yes"?
1. Possible milk traces
Oreos are made in factories that also handle milk. Oreo's UK FAQ says many Oreo products are suitable for vegans "but may include cross-contaminants of milk". Earlier versions of Oreo's FAQ, quoted by outlets such as Sporked, said Oreos were not suitable for vegans because of milk cross-contact. Most vegans treat "may contain" warnings as an allergy issue rather than an ingredient issue, but it's your call.
2. Sugar and bone char
Some US cane sugar is filtered through bone char, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group. Labels just say "sugar", so there's no way to tell from the pack. Stricter vegans avoid non-organic cane sugar for this reason.
3. Palm oil
Palm oil comes from plants, so it's vegan by ingredient. Some vegans avoid it for environmental reasons. Oreo's maker, Mondelēz, says it requires deforestation-free palm oil from its suppliers.
Are all Oreo flavors the same?
No. Recipes vary by flavor and country. For example, US Fudge Covered Oreos list nonfat milk and are not vegan. Golden Oreos have no milk on their label but list "natural and artificial flavor", and natural flavors can legally come from animal sources in the US.
