Yuka is one of the most popular food scanner apps in the world. But it was built to answer a different question from the one most vegans are asking. Here's an honest look at how Yuka and Vegan Scan AI compare, and when each one is the better choice.

The short answer

Yuka tells you how healthy a product is. Vegan Scan AI tells you whether it's vegan. If your main question is "can I eat this as a vegan?", Vegan Scan AI is built for that. If you want health scores for food and cosmetics, Yuka is excellent.

How Yuka works

Yuka scans a product's barcode and gives it a health score out of 100. According to Yuka, the score is based on nutrition (60%), additives (30%) and whether the product is organic (10%). It covers about 4 million food products and 2 million cosmetics, and it is hugely popular, with a 4.8 rating from over 100,000 reviews on the US App Store.

Vegan checking is not Yuka's main job. Vegan is one of the food preferences available in Yuka Premium, which alerts you when a product doesn't match. Yuka also notes that it does not take traces into account. Premium is listed at $15 a year on Yuka's site, with optional higher tiers in the App Store.

How Vegan Scan AI works

Vegan Scan AI reads the ingredient list from a photo. You snap the label, and the app checks every ingredient for animal-derived sources, including E-numbers like carmine (E120) and shellac (E904). You get one of three results:

Vegan (no animal ingredients found), Not Vegan (one or more ingredients likely come from animals), or Check (an ingredient could be plant- or animal-based, such as "natural flavor" or E471). Each flagged ingredient comes with a plain-English explanation.

Because it reads the label rather than a database, it works on local brands, imported foods and new products that may not be in any barcode database yet. You can also scan a barcode on supported products.

When Yuka is the better choice

Choose Yuka if you mainly want to eat healthier, compare products by nutrition and additives, or check cosmetics. Its database is enormous, and its health scores are useful whether or not you're vegan.

When Vegan Scan AI is the better choice

Choose Vegan Scan AI if your first question is always "is it vegan?", especially if you:

• buy imported or local products that barcode apps often don't recognise
• want to know why something isn't vegan, ingredient by ingredient
• want a clear "check" warning for ingredients that could go either way
• are new to veganism and still learning hidden ingredients like whey, carmine and L-cysteine

Plenty of people use both: Yuka for health, Vegan Scan AI for vegan checks. New to label reading? Start with our list of 25 hidden animal ingredients, or see how we compare with Fig.
